Who Will Pay To Restore Land Damaged By Oil and Gas? You or Oil and Gas?

Louisiana coastal wetlands cut to ribbons by oil and gas activity.

You have heard about the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East lawsuit against 97 oil and gas companies for damages done to the Louisiana coast. We believe it is our best, and possibly only, chance to begin addressing Louisiana’s coastal land loss in a meaningful way. The Legislature is trying to stop it.

Let us break it down for you:

  • Lousiana has already lost an area about the size of the state of Delaware! That works out to a rate of loss of a football field an hour. If nothing is done the prognosis is very bad.
  • At least 17 scientific studies, including those by the oil and gas industry, conclude that the oil and gas industry is responsible for some portion of Louisiana coastal land loss.
  • The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East filed a lawsuit in an effort to make the oil and gas industry fix only the damage that they are responsible for.
  • Your tax dollars are already being used to fix damage caused by private oil and gas companies. BILLIONS of dollars are needed to fund the Louisiana coastal restoration Master Plan. Huge portions of that money will be used to fix damage caused by private oil and gas companies.
  • Governor Jindal and members of the Louisiana Legislature want to stop the lawsuit in order to protect their friends and donors in the oil and gas industry. Senate Bill 553 (SB553) by Senator Robert Adley has been introduced to derail the lawsuit.
  • 74% of Louisiana Citizens polled do not think that the Legislature should intervene in the lawsuit.
  • SB553 is scheduled to be voted on soon!

We need you to call your Senator and tell them to vote NO to SB553. Tell them that you think that the oil and gas industry should fix what they broke.
