Big business wants Europeans to pay them to burn your forests for energy.
Biomass Secure Power Inc. of Canada, Drax Biomass International of the United Kingdom and Point Bio Energy of Wisconsin are in the process of building facilities at the Port of Baton Rouge that will manufacture wood pellets out of trees from Louisiana forests and then ship them to Europe to be burned in power plants and furnaces. Clear-Cut Louisiana Swamp Documented by Atchafalaya Basinkeeper. |
Isn’t this carbon neutral?
No, wood burns faster than trees grow. Trees which have been storing carbon from the atmosphere over many decades will be burnt in a matter of hours releasing their decades of carbon in that short time. In fact when you take into account the loss of the carbon removal abilities of those cut trees and the fossil fuels needed to process the pellets and then ship them across the ocean, using trees for power is even worse for the atmosphere than coal.
Isn’t this green?
Isn’t this good for the local economy?
What makes this even more disturbing is the trend in the south of wood pellet operations targeting bottomland forests and swamps as timber sources. Louisiana only has a fraction of its original bottomland forests and swamps left and those that remain are under great threat from subsidence, coastal land loss, development and being turned into garden mulch. These bottomlands and swamplands are also the heart of South Louisiana cultural identity and way of life. The last thing we need is for greedy corporations to grind them into wood pellets for Europeans to burn in a misguided attempt to be more “green.”
The Dogwood Alliance has produced an investigative video to tell everyone they can about this issue. Get informed and get involved! From Dogwood Alliance:
Southern wetlands are going ‘Up in Smoke’ so that European governments can meet their renewable energy targets and European citizens can keep their lights on!

Giant wood pellet manufacturers like Enviva, featured in our new video below, are chopping down our forests, turning them into pellets, and shipping them over to Europe for companies like Drax to burn for electricity. This madness needs to stop!
We must send a clear message: Our Forests Aren’t Fuel! Please spread the word about Our Forests Aren’t Fuel: Wetlands Up In Smoke.
